Always A Stranger

Always a stranger among you,
fixing to leave.
You remember me years ago,
briefly appearing.

I'm only the face I've shown
and a few words softly spoken.
You've never held me
and now your arms can only wave goodbye.

If you had troubled,
or I had been more apt to lie still,
we might have been lovers,
I might have been someone you'd regret losing.

I'll never know how your hair smells
when you're sleeping.
You'll never hear me curse your down machines,
never see me cry.
